What is the best thing that I love about my work?

I am an editor, I mainly deal with novels. The thing I love the most is contributing to the creative process of a writer I’m working with. In a certain way I am his “second eye”, it’s great to help him express his own potential.

Io sono un editor, mi occupo soprattutto di romanzi. La cosa che amo di più è contribuire al processo creativo dello scrittore con cui sto lavorando, in un certo senso sono il suo “secondo occhio” ed è bellissimo aiutarlo a esprimere al meglio le proprie potenzialità.

What is my idea of perfect happiness?

To me, happiness is to express my creativity in every single aspect of my life. I feel fine when I do a good job; every single book I care about is like a son to me! I am happy when I write, or travel, and meet people who make me appreciate the world under a different point of view.

La felicità per me è riuscire ad esprimere la mia creatività in ogni aspetto della vita. Mi sento bene quando faccio un buon lavoro, ogni libro che mi viene affidato è come un figlio! What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

Sometimes i really work too much. By doing that i risk leaving out some other important aspects of my life. However, i’m getting better! Especially since i met my partner.

A volte lavoro davvero troppo. Così facendo rischio di trascurare alcuni altri importanti aspetti della mia vita. Comunque sto migliorando! Soprattutto da quando ho incontrato il mio compagno.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

Martina Testa, an italian editor and translator, a young woman endowed with an extraordinary intelligence. Lorenza Pieri, a writer who has been working for years in the publishing industry. I was lucky they both lectured a course on the publishing field I attended some years ago.

My greatest extravagance can be described in two words: genius and insanity.

I am hardly insincere. Sometime I am even too honest. I could lie, maybe, to protect someone who is in danger.

È difficile che io non sia sincera, a volte lo sono anche troppo. Forse potrei mentire per proteggere qualcuno che si trova in una situazione pericolosa.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

In the publishing field (but also in the world in general), the figure of the editor does not get the proper consideration, and I don’t like it. The editor often spends months in helping an author improve his work, but his name will never appear on the book he labored for. Luckily, many publishing houses are very sensitive to this problem and started acknowledging all the professionals who took part in the project. I work for one of these publishing houses.

Nel mondo dell’editoria (ma anche nel mondo in generale), non sempre viene attribuita alla figura professionale dell’editor la giusta importanza e tutto ciò non mi piace. Spesso un editor passa dei mesi aiutando un autore a migliorare l’opera, ma il suo nome non comparirà mai sul romanzo per cui ha faticato tanto. Per fortuna esistono case editrici sensibili a questo problema, che inseriscono nel “prodotto finito” il nome di tutti i professionisti che hanno collaborato al progetto. Io lavoro per una di queste case editrici.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

Last year in Sardinia, when I was offered to be the editor for a special author, a famous international ex narco-trafficker currently in a high-security prison, who was mentioned in Roberto Saviano’s book “ZeroZeroZero” . It was not easy to work in a jail, but the result was outstanding. I cannot reveal more than this, the novel is about to be published and I am sure it will be a hit.

L’anno scorso in Sardegna, quando mi è stato proposto di diventare l’editor di un autore speciale, un famoso ex narcotrafficante internazionale attualmente detenuto in un carcere di alta sicurezza, citato da Roberto Saviano nel suo libro “ZeroZeroZero”. Non è stato facile lavorare in carcere ma il risultato è stato eccezionale. Non posso rivelare di più, il romanzo verrà pubblicato presto e sono sicura che sarà un successo.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

I was born without the sense of smell. I wish I could have it back. Maybe life could smell different.

Da quando sono nata non riesco a sentire gli odori. Mi piacerebbe avere a disposizione il senso dell’olfatto. Forse la vita potrebbe avere un profumo diverso?

What is my greatest achievement in work?

My greatest satisfaction was the awareness that the books I worked on always had excellent reviews, so that I was asked to be an editor for several other authors.

La più grande soddisfazione è stata quella di constatare che i libri su cui ho lavorato hanno avuto ottime recensioni e poi di essere stata richiesta come editor da vari autori.

Where would I most like to live?

I would surely move to Paris: It’s the place where I feel home, and deeply inspired.

My greatest treasure is my fortitude: it comes out especially in the hardest moments.

I am a determined and realistic woman, but fortunately I can still look at the world through the eyes of a little girl.

I mainly find inspiration when I am in my country house, which has a view over the sea.

The music-bar Abetone in Sassari, where you can have a tasty Italian breakfast, or have lunch with a delicious Sardinian focaccia. In the evening it turns into a music-bar. When I write, I often go there to find inspiration.

In my life and my job Art is fundamental under each of its forms. Some masterpieces of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the British painter and poet who was amongst the founders of the Pre Raphaelite movement, are able to carry me into a world I recognize as familiar.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on?

In 2018 I am going to write a novel inspired to my experience as an editor for a prisoner in a maximum security prison. It was a very important moment in my life and this is a story I want to tell.
